Severity of Gambling Addiction by Gender and Age

Among males entering SUD or mental health treatment in the Vista Research Network between January 2024 and April 2026, 3.5% reported also struggling with gambling disorder.  Men between the ages of 18 and 49 were particularly vulnerable, with the incidence peaking between 24 and 29 years of age:

Gambling disorder was less common among women entering treatment.  During this period, 1.5% of females entering SUD or primary mental health treatment reported having a gambling disorder.  The highest incidence of gambling addiction was reported among women between the ages of 30 and 59:

Individuals with both a gambling disorder and a substance use disorder are more likely to leave treatment early.   Additionally, patients whose gambling disorder has not been  effectively treated are less likely to report being abstinent one year after treatment.
